Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to achieve effective governance of online rumors through the proposed rumor propagation model and immunization strategy.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper leverages the agent-based modeling (ABM) method to model individuals from two aspects, behavior and attitude. Based on the analysis and research of online data, we propose a rumor propagation model, namely the Untouched view transmit removed-Susceptible hesitate agree disagree (Unite-Shad), and devise an immunization strategy, namely the Gravity Immunization Strategy (GIS). A graph-based framework, namely Pregel, is used to carry out the rumor propagation simulation experiments. Through the experiments, the rationality of the Unite-Shad and the effectiveness of the GIS are verified.

Findings

The study discovers that the inconsistency between human behaviors and attitudes in rumor propagation can be explained by the Unite-shad model. Besides, the GIS, which shows better performance in small-world networks than in scale-free networks, can effectively suppress rumor propagation in the early stage.

Research limitations/implications

This paper provides an effective immunization strategy for rumor governance. Specifically, the Unite-Shad model reveals the mechanism of rumor propagation, and the GIS provides an effective governance method for selecting immune nodes.

Originality/value

The inconsistency of human behaviors and attitudes in real scenes is modeled in the Unite-Shad model. Combined with the model, the definition of diffusion domain is proposed and a novel immunization strategy, namely GIS, is designed, which is significant for the social governance of rumor propagation.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose an electromagnetic prismatic joint with variable stiffness. The joint can absorb the sudden shocks and improve the natural dynamics of robotics. The ability of regulating the output stiffness can also be used for force control in industrial applications.

Design/methodology/approach

Unlike some existing designs of variable stiffness joints (VSJs) in which the stiffness regulation is implemented using the stiffness adjustment motor and mechanisms, the main structure of the electromagnetic VSJ is a permanent magnet (PM) arranged inside coaxial cylinder coils. The adjustment of input current can cause the change of magnetic force between the PM and the cylinder coils, and thus leads to the variation of output stiffness.

Findings

According to the theoretical model, the output stiffness of the electromagnetic VSJ is linearly proportional to the input current. The experiments further indicate that the current-controlled stiffness can make the stiffness variation response of this VSJ more rapid for practical applications. Due to the large damping introduced by the copper-based self-lubrication bearings, the VSJ shows good properties in motion positioning and trajectory tracking.

Originality/value

In summary, the electromagnetic VSJ is compact in size and light in weight. It is possible to realize the online adaptability to work conditions with dynamic load by using this VSJ.

Abstract

Purpose

A new deviation propagation model considering the form defects in compliant assembly process is proposed. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the deviation propagation by using the basic deviation fields. In particular, each basic deviation field is defined with a generalized compliance matrix of part.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the form defects of parts may be decomposed into a linear combination of basic deviation fields, which are constructed by the eigen-decomposition of the structure stiffness of parts with ideal dimensions. Each basic deviation field is defined with a generalized compliance of part. Moreover, by analyzing the relationship between the basic deviation fields before and after assembling process, a new sensitive matrix is obtained in which each value expresses the correlation of a basic deviation field between the parts and the assembly.

Findings

This model may solve the deviation propagation problems of compliant assembly with considering form defects. Here, one case is used to illustrate the deviation propagation in the assembly process. The results indicate that the proposed method has higher accuracy than the method of influence coefficient when the entire deviation fields of parts are considered. Moreover, the numerical results with the proposed method basically agree with the experimental measurements.

Research limitations/implications

Owing to the hypothesis of linear superposition of basic deviation fields, the research in this paper is limited to the parts with linear elastic deformation. However, the entire form defects of parts are considered rather than the deviations of the local feature points. It may be extended to analyze the three-dimensional deviations of complex thin-walled parts.

Originality/value

A deviation propagation model considering parts form defects is developed to achieve more accurate predictions of assembly deviation by using the basic deviation fields.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a framework for optimizing the pose in the assembly process of the non-ideal parts considering the manufacturing deviations and contact deformations. Furthermore, the accuracy of the method would be verified by comparing it with the other conventional methods for calculating the optimal assembly pose.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the surface morphology of the parts with manufacturing deviations would be modeled to obtain the skin model shapes that can characterize the specific geometric features of the part. The model can provide the basis for the subsequent contact deformation analysis. Second, the simulated non-nominal components are discretized into point cloud data, and the spatial position of the feature points is corrected. Furthermore, the evaluation index to measure the assembly quality has been established, which integrates the contact deformations and the spatial relationship of the non-nominal parts’ key feature points. Third, the improved particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm combined with the finite element method is applied to the process of solving the optimal pose of the assembly, and further deformation calculations are conducted based on interference detection. Finally, the feasibility of the optimal pose prediction method is verified by a case.

Findings

The proposed method has been well suited to solve the problem of the assembly process for the non-ideal parts with complex geometric deviations. It can obtain the reasonable assembly optimal pose considering the constraints of the surface morphological features and contact deformations. This paper has verified the effectiveness of the method with an example of the shaft-hole assembly.

Research limitations/implications

The method proposed in this paper has been well suited to the problem of the assembly process for the non-ideal parts with complex geometric deviations. It can obtain the reasonable assembly optimal pose considering the constraints of the surface morphological features and contact deformations. This paper has verified the method with an example of the shaft-hole assembly.

Originality/value

The different surface morphology influenced by manufacturing deviations will lead to the various contact behaviors of the mating surfaces. The assembly problem for the components with complex geometry is usually accompanied by deformation due to the loading during the contact process, which may further affect the accuracy of the assembly. Traditional approaches often use worst-case methods such as tolerance offsets to analyze and optimize the assembly pose. In this paper, it is able to characterize the specific parts in detail by introducing the skin model shapes represented with the point cloud data. The dynamic changes in the parts' contact during the fitting process are also considered. Using the PSO method that takes into account the contact deformations improve the accuracy by 60.7% over the original method that uses geometric alignment alone. Moreover, it can optimize the range control of the contact to the maximum extent to prevent excessive deformations.

This paper aims to propose an optimization method to automatically adjust the spatial route of multibend pipes to meet the assembly demands in constrained space.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose an optimization method to automatically adjust the spatial route of multibend pipes to meet the assembly demands in constrained space.

Design/methodology/approach

The compact geometric parameters that uniquely determine the pipe route are analyzed. Besides, the relationship between these parameters and the end pose is revealed based on the exponential product formula. Mathematical representations for the engineering constraints, including the end pose restriction, collision interference, manufacture ability and geometric limitations, are further established. On this basis, the adjustment of the spatial route is formulated as a multiconstraint optimization problem. A modified particle swarm optimization method based on the combination of gradient projection and swarm intelligence is designed to find the near-optimal pipe that meets the required assembly demands.

Findings

The experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively find the feasible pipe route that satisfies the engineering constraints and the end pose requirement is highly guaranteed.

Originality/value

The proposed method can automate the geometric adjustment of multi-bend pipes to meet the actual assembly demands, which significantly reduces manual efforts and guarantees high accuracy. The results demonstrate the possibility of further applications in the pipe assembly or design process, especially in ships, aerospace products or pressure vessels.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a fast and robust 3D point set registration method for pose estimation of assembly features with few distinctive local features in the manufacturing process.

Design/methodology/approach

The distance between the two 3D objects is analytically approximated by the implicit representation of the target model. Specifically, the implicit B-spline surface is adopted as an interface to derive the distance metric. With the distance metric, the point set registration problem is formulated into an unconstrained nonlinear least-squares optimization problem. Simulated annealing nested Gauss-Newton method is designed to solve the non-convex problem. This integration of gradient-based optimization and heuristic searching strategy guarantees both global robustness and sufficient efficiency.

Findings

The proposed method improves the registration efficiency while maintaining high accuracy compared with several commonly used approaches. Convergence can be guaranteed even with critical initial poses or in partial overlapping conditions. The multiple flanges pose estimation experiment validates the effectiveness of the proposed method in real-world applications.

Originality/value

The proposed registration method is much more efficient because no feature estimation or point-wise correspondences update are performed. At each iteration of the Gauss–Newton optimization, the poses are updated in a singularity-free format without taking the derivatives of a bunch of scalar trigonometric functions. The advantage of the simulated annealing searching strategy is combined to improve global robustness. The implementation is relatively straightforward, which can be easily integrated to realize automatic pose estimation to guide the assembly process.

Abstract

Purpose

The relatively short history of internet colleges in China offers a glimpse of the potential of online education in the country and also reveals many of the problems involved in institutionalizing online education in an established system. This paper aims to present the development of online higher education in China by reviewing the development of “internet colleges”, examine the unique features of online higher education and the challenges it faces, and discuss the future directions of online higher education in China.

Design/methodology/approach

By reviewing major policies on online education in China and the development of “internet colleges” in the past two decades, this paper reviews the development of online higher education in China.

Findings

The development of online higher education in China has unique features: central control and the support from learning support centers affiliated with “internet colleges”. To further develop online higher education in China, it has to address two major challenges it is facing now: perceived low quality and prestige, and limited opportunities for international collaboration. Some of the problems are universal, such as quality assurance and the perception of quality and prestige. Some are unique to China, such as the direct involvement of the Ministry of Education in setting guidelines and regulations about online educational programs (though similar problems could arise in other centralized education systems where the government, rather than the market and the public, plays a major role).

Originality/value

The vast educational market in China and the potential of online education also present interesting opportunities for foreign higher education institutions.
